Welcome to Kittredge School!
For 80 years, Kittredge School has provided challenging academics in a warm and nurturing environment. Students tell us that as they enter the school, they have the feeling that they are coming home. We believe that a safe environment allows students to feel uniquely supported by their Kittredge family, as they reach for the stars. We encourage our students to take responsible risks and to see just how far they can soar.
Kittredge kids are learning not just what is found in books, but they are also creating habits that are consistent with intelligent thinking. This year, our students will be thinking interdependently, finding humor, creating, imagining, and innovating. There are no limits to what Kittredge kids can achieve.

Kittredge kids are intelligent thinkers with big hearts. They are respectful, trustworthy, and caring. They are the ones who will do an extra lap to run alongside and encourage the last runner in the race. We are a small school, with a mighty heart.

Welcome to Kittredge.

Warmly,
Louise Pon-Barry,
Principal

Challenging Academics:
-
Individualized Academic Support: One size does not fit all and students begin the school year with a wide range of academic abilities. With a ratio of 7:1, teachers build meaningful relationships with their students and know not only where students are in their learning, but also who they are as learners. We challenge each child at their individual level across subjects such as math, reading and writing.
-
A love of learning: Our small class sizes give us the ability to hone in on a student’s areas of strength or areas of needed support. This allows us to scaffold each student to be challenged at the level that is right for them. Goals are attainable and students develop a sense of achievement and love of learning that keeps them engaged and fulfilled.

Nurturing Environment: Kittredge School is built on relationships developed in a family-like atmosphere, and teachers and parents communicate often to support student growth.
-
Combination classes: In grades K-5 combination classes have older students model behavior and academics goals for younger students. Older students are solidifying the academic skills they learned as they often work in tandem with younger students. This allows younger students to have extra attention from a slightly older guide on the side. The following year this student becomes the guide and models what they have learned in the previous year.
-
Meaningful rapport: For teachers, two years with a student creates a meaningful relationship. In the first year, expectations are set, trust is established, and a second year allows the teacher to pick up where they left off, setting the bar for new goals that are appropriate for the student in the coming year. The size of our community allows for strong bonds between teachers and students.
-
Learning to fly: In middle school, students are becoming independent learners and they require less assistance than when they were younger. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are independent classes. Teachers employ socratic thinking, encouraging student to use metacognition. Middle school students are becoming responsible for their own academic growth and they are obtaining the organizational skills needed for their personal academic progress, preparing them for high school.

School connectedness leads to higher grades, as well as better health and well-being. For teachers, two years with a student creates a meaningful relationship. Kittredge School is a non-sectarian, private, independent, non-discriminatory academic school. We strive to create an environment wherein every community member feels a sense of belonging and every student feels accepted and celebrated for their uniqueness.
Through the Character Counts program, and its pillars of “Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship,” our community actively works to promote an inclusive school culture. These pillars are of paramount importance in our community and take precedence over differences in race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or political perspective.
While we are all members of the same community, we arrive with unique histories and resources. We celebrate our differences and are glad to have the opportunity to learn from one another. Through school-wide assemblies and classroom activities, our students learn that everyone is welcome.
