What's a Key Ingredient to the Most Effective Schools Around the World? Here's a Clue: It's Happening at Kittredge!
At Kittredge, we practice something called "looping," where students can expect to have the same teacher multiple years in a row. A recent article in the New York Times explains that looping is one of the foremost indicators of a successful school. Why? Because teachers who get to know their students over multiple years develop stronger relationships with them, identify and highlight their strengths, and recognize and support the places they might struggle.
Sarah, a current parent, said it best, "One of the things I love about Kittredge is how well the teachers know the students, which comes in part from small class sizes, but also, in part, comes from the fact that each teacher typically has each student more than one year."
Take a look at the article yourself, and let us know what you think!

Drop-off and Pick-up Courtesy
Please travel safely through the intersection of 25th and Lake. We know that morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups can be busy. We appreciate your patience while moving in and out of the white zone, keeping the intersection clear, as well as your consideration for our neighbors and their driveways. We love seeing you every day before and after school, smiling and driving safely!
Last Week to Sign Up for the Green Energy Challenge!
Does your family care about the environment? Does your child like science and building cool things?
If yes, don't miss the Green Energy Challenge at Kittredge!
The Green Energy Challenge is an innovative, FREE, after-school, hands-on educational programdesigned to teach kids (grades 3rd-7th) about:
Climate Change: We delve into the causes and consequences of climate change, empowering students to understand and address this critical global issue.
Energy Science: Our curriculum emphasizes renewable and green energy sources, providing students with essential knowledge for a sustainable future.
Ways to Make a Difference: We guide students in exploring actionable steps they can take to address climate change in their daily lives.
Our curriculum is:
Innovative: Tailored to engage students in grades 3rd-7th, ensuring the material is both accessible and exciting.
Highly Hands-On: More than half of each class is spent building and playing with things like solar cars, water batteries and wind power generators.
Gamified and Simplified: We simplify and gamify complex material to make it accessible, interesting and fun.
In addition, this is a good extracurricular activity for high school applications!
The program will be taught by our Kittredge alumni, Jacob and Ari Bushler, and other volunteer student educators from St. Ignatius College Preparatory. The program was offered at Kittredge last year and during summer school and received great student and parent reviews.
Program format:
The program will be taught as a series of 6 one-hour+ classes on Mondays from 3:30pm-4:45pm on the following dates:
10/30/23, 11/6/23, 11/13/23, 11/27/23, 12/4/23, 12/11/23

Register for Chess Club Session Two!
Hello Kittredge community! My name is Jeremy, and I’m a passionate chess player and coach who is excited to share a love of this beautiful game with Kittredge’s students.
Chess Club is typically run in individual six week sessions. However, because of upcoming minimum days, this session will be a four-class session, ending before Winter Break. The second session will be held each Friday from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM from Friday, October 27th to Friday, December 15th, barring Kittredge minimum days and Fri, Dec 1st, when I'll be out of town.
This session will focus on teaching chess tactics.
Chess Club will be open to all Grade 1-8 students, regardless of previous experience with chess.
Each lesson will be split between a short 15-30 minutes of interactive instruction and 30-45 minutes of gameplay. While there is plenty to learn, our primary focus will be on creating a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment to enjoy chess and build community.
All materials will be provided.
This session will cost $100 per student (because it is a shorter session). Please fill out the below form to register your child:
Payment will be due on the date of the first session and can be paid via venmo to @jeremy-mann-1, cash, or check addressed to Jeremy Mann. Please email jeremyalexmann@gmail.com for any clarifying questions.

Empower our School Community
Support the KPA’s Fundraising Efforts through Corporate Matching Programs & our new initiative to establish a Quasi-Endowment
Corporate Matching Programs
As the holiday season approaches, our hearts are filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of togetherness. As many of you know, the fundraising efforts of the Kittredge Parents Association (KPA) enhance the school experience for our children and teachers with books for classroom libraries, writing celebrations, additional classroom supplies, enrichment programs, community building events, sports equipment and rentals, and many other ways to support the school community.
During the months of November and December, when we celebrate National Giving Day and National Giving Month, many employers offer free funds to donate or corporate matching programs that will match the donations made by their employees to their non-profits of choice. So, by contributing to the KPA between November 1 and December 31, you can maximize your impact and know that your contributions are going a long way to keeping Kittredge a phenomenal seat of learning.
Between November 1 and December 31, we encourage you to check with your HR department or visit Benevity to see if your employer participates. This year, the KPA, a 501c non-profit organization (EIN 20-8184470), has a corporate match fundraising goal of $10,000.
How to Donate and Utilize Corporate Matching Programs
1. Visit our KPA Donation Page: Go to https://www.kittredge.org/kpa and make your contribution by December 31, 2023. Every dollar counts, and no amount is too small.
2. Check if Your Employer Matches Donations: Many companies have programs in place to match employee donations. Reach out to your HR department or visit Benevity to see if your employer participates.
3. Submit a Matching Request: If your employer does offer a matching program, submit a matching request. This step is crucial in ensuring that your donation is doubled and goes twice as far.
Quasi-Endowment
The KPA is excited to announce our new initiative to establish a quasi-endowment.
What is a Quasi-Endowment?
A quasi-endowment is a fund that is invested and used to generate income for a nonprofit organization. The principal of the fund is not spent, so that it can continue to grow and provide a source of funding for the organization in perpetuity.
Why Do We Need a Quasi-Endowment?
We want to create a quasi-endowment to ensure that our parent association has a reliable source of funding for years to come. This will allow us to continue to support our students and teachers in a variety of ways, such as providing funding for field trips, enrichment programs, and many other ways to build and support the school community.
How Can You Help?
We are asking for your help in establishing our quasi-endowment. We have a parent who has generously offered to seed the quasi endowment with a significant amount and we are urging the parent community to strengthen this effort by donating. Your gift will help us to secure the future of our parent association and continue to support our students and teachers for years to come.
Please reach out to Anna Malyala (amalyala@gmail.com), KPA Treasurer, for any questions and additional information on how to support this effort.
Impact of Your Donation
Your donation to the KPA quasi-endowment will have a lasting impact on our students and teachers. It will help us to provide them with the resources they need to succeed!
